Moniek Toebosch: Questions about the Archive

On Wednesday 13 May, LI-MA hosted Digital Care: Moniek Toebosch, an evening dedicated to the arrival of Toebosch’ archive at LI-MA, featuring newly digitised works as well as our plans for future exhibitions and activities, and the particular challenges and surprises of activating this multidisciplinary archive. Our archival work is ongoing, and this event was only the first of many public occasions to come. During the event LI-MA asked you some questions, to implore you to think with us and with each other. To honour the participatory nature of a lot of Toebosch' work, we extend these questions to the digital realm. Please feel free to answer our questions, and above all, to share your Toebosch-related memories, ideas, and raise your own questions!

How can the archive accurately represent ephemeral works like the ones Moniek Toebosch presented at the Brabant Biënnale?

“Not recognisable as such, is that clear?”
In 1980 Toebosch participated in the Brabant Biënnale, a month-long art festival spread out over five cities in the Dutch province of Brabant; she presented two works in Tilburg. One of the works was an installation in a public space, open to visitors during the length of the festival. Additionally, she created a one-day performance on the second to last day of the festival. The archive contains fragmented documentation on these works, including some interesting tactile remnants like hair and feathers.
The installation transformed a pedestrian tunnel that was closed down due to vandalism. Toebosch hung fluorescent tube lights in the tunnel at knee-height; she created two paths in the length of the tunnel by placing loose metal sheets on the floor. The tunnel was filled with feathers. Visitors were encouraged by the artist to run along the steel plated paths, producing loud noise that would reverberate throughout the tunnel as well as displacing the air, setting in motion the feathers

The performance took place at Kultureel Sentrum Tilburg. Before the performance Toebosch cut off a significant part of her hair. During the performance she was furiously working out on a hometrainer, accompanied by a slide projector and music. Several ‘transporters’, people carrying speakers with a pre-recorder sound compilation by the artist, guided visitors towards the performance.

Material related to Toebosch’ activities are not fully centralised at LI-MA, other archives contain supplementary material not found here. How can we deal with this?
